Abstract
The advent of Fifth-Generation (5G) networks introduces a paradigm shift towards supporting a massive number of connected devices with diverse and stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, including ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). Within this complex ecosystem, seamless and efficient handover management is critical to maintain persistent connectivity and ensure user quality of experience. Traditional handover mechanisms, which are largely distributed and reliant on complex protocols in inflexible hardware, struggle to meet the dynamic and stringent demands of 5G scenarios like dense heterogeneous networks and high-speed mobility. This article explores the transformative potential of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) in revolutionising handover management. By decoupling the control plane from the data plane, SDN introduces a logically centralised, programmable, and global view of the network, enabling intelligent, predictive, and context-aware handover decisions. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the architectural innovations brought by SDN, including novel handover procedures, the integration of machine learning for predictive mobility management, and the synergy with Network Function Virtualisation (NFV). Furthermore, it rigorously examines the significant challenges that impede widespread deployment, such as control plane latency, scalability concerns, security vulnerabilities, and interoperability with legacy systems. The discussion synthesises findings from recent research and testbed implementations, concluding that while SDN-based handover management presents a formidable solution for 5G mobility, overcoming its inherent challenges requires continued research in areas like distributed control architectures, standardised interfaces, and robust security frameworks to fully realise the promise of truly seamless mobility in next-generation networks.
